Educational Leadership as Communication |
Richardson mandates a shift in how leaders communicate their vision in supporting students in 21st Century learning. His TED Talk forces us to reflect on our role as providers of opportunities for students and in essence our school communities. By personalizing the educational experience for all learners, we can meet the challenge of providing a purpose and voice for a new curriculum. A curriculum that is being found and explored by students that are no longer waiting for us to deliver it to them. There are elements of Richardson's talk that I disagree with and this is centred on his view as assessment as an unnecessary element in education as he perceives it as too narrow and not reflective of the changes that are happening within the world and especially in technology. In my view, this is contrary to many key components of my work and even my studies. The proof that I turn to is the establishment and world wide acceptance of the ISTE standards for learners and leaders. These are standards that are necessary for the transformation to digital learning. Although prescriptive, they are by no means narrow as defined by Richardson and most importantly they are dynamic. In this way, Richardson's statements around assessment only reflect traditional , standardized thought and not the new role of assessment (for, as and of) in learning as a living guide to improvement.
